Project tracking: what going on
There are four variables to professional project supervision: expenditure, timing, duration and producing a satisfactory result. Qualified PMs also attempt to make the organization of business processes better. Most undertakings employ such components as people, funds, and equipment to deliver something of value and hit selected targets. There are a number of contributing factors that are very important for successful project management. A couple of them can be found below:
- Task setting and reviewing progress.
- Managing risk. Take any project and you will see that it contains a number of risks that should be dealt with.
- Choosing people and machinery for the project.
- Defining the products of the project.
- Managing what is going on: assigning tasks, supervising execution.
- Managing adequate quality.
- Handling instability. Change happens. The majority of tasks occur in time, so the element of dynamics should be accounted for.
- Talking to everybody involved with the project.
Regular ways of supervising projects, such a pencil and paper, can be used to deal with most of these things. However, specialized project tracking software offers a lot of important benefits:
- It simplifies scheduling. Duration can be adjusted by the program using the workload information. It is possible to define work calendars for different employees. It also makes it simpler to track progress on various jobs.
- Working with a number of projects and meeting a number of requirements. Executives can employ project tracking software to simplify analysis of several big projects.
- Critical path is clearly visible. The critical path of a project consists of jobs that determine the actual length of the project. If an activity on the critical path takes longer than expected, dates of work on other tasks will be changed. Whereas other activities that are not on the critical path may take less or more time and not change the duration of other activities in this project.
- Disseminating data among the team members. Big projects require data exchanges. Groupware productivity tracking software allows each participant to be on the same page at any given point in time.
Should you every time choose task tracking software?
Similar to any other tool, project tracking software has its limitation. It produces the greatest result when used for a number of big projects. It might be a good idea to manage smaller projects manually, so that you do not have to deal with big overhead associated with operating complicated programs.
