In the early times they were produced exclusively from timber, that's why these instruments are called woodwinds. Now timber is used only in the production of some parts of these instruments but it still plays the main role in their sounding. There are two sorts of woodwinds after the way of blowing: labial and lingual. In labials the air is winded into special lateral opening in the head of the instrument. Sharp brim of the opening separates the air flow. The music forms due to the resonance of air flow within the pipe. Flute refers to this type of musical instruments. The construction of lingual woodwinds is a little bit differing. There is a reed through which the performer blows the air. A single reed is a slender cane lamina that shuts the aperture in the mouthpiece of the musical instrument and leaves a narrow chink there.
